What will education look like in 2025? According to surveys about extended reality, many educators think that XR (virtual reality, mixed reality, augmented reality) will be as commonly used as the mobile devices we see today. Venture capital funding has tripled in 2018 to a whopping $1.7 billion. Much of that growth is expected to be in education applications for XR.

In the classroom of the future, XR will likely enable learners to have a more immersive learning experience. It is easy to imagine learners being able to “act” on a stage that looks and feels just like Shakespeare’s Globe Theater. But is that enough? The best learning experiences are those that allow the learner to create. We need to find ways for learners to be able to develop their own XR environments. Learn about the Globe Theater, yes, but then be able to design a brand new theater environment and share it.
